Duolingo English Test (DET)

The Duolingo English Test is an online, at-home adaptive English test accepted by an increasing number of Australian universities. It is not currently accepted by the Department of Home Affairs for visa applications.

Test format

The Duolingo English Test takes approximately 1 hour and can be completed entirely online from home using a computer with a webcam. The test is adaptive — question difficulty adjusts based on your answers. It includes tasks such as: - Listening to and repeating sentences - Reading words aloud - Writing sentences about images - Speaking about a topic - Reading comprehension questions - Identifying real English words from non-words The test uses AI proctoring — you are recorded and your environment is monitored.

Scoring

Scores range from 10 to 160. The test also generates four sub-scores: - Literacy - Comprehension - Conversation - Production Australian universities that accept DET typically require scores in the range of 100–135 depending on course and institution. **Important:** DET is NOT accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for any visa applications (student, skilled, partner, etc.). If you need to apply for an Australian visa, you will need IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or OET (healthcare only).

DET is convenient — completed from home in about 1 hour with results in 2 days. But confirm with your specific Australian university that they accept DET before booking.
