International English Language Testing System

IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted English test in Australia for both visa applications and university admissions. It is administered by British Council, IDP, and Cambridge Assessment English.

Score requirements

Test format

IELTS Academic has four sections: **Listening** (30 minutes + 10 min transfer time): 40 questions across 4 recordings. Tests ability to understand spoken English in academic and everyday contexts. **Reading** (60 minutes): 40 questions across 3 long texts. Texts come from academic journals, books, and magazines. Tests comprehension, inference, and vocabulary. **Writing** (60 minutes): Two tasks — Task 1 (20 min, describe a chart/graph in 150+ words) and Task 2 (40 min, essay response to an argument or question, 250+ words). **Speaking** (11–14 minutes, face-to-face with an examiner): Three parts — introduction and interview, a short talk on a topic card, and a discussion.

Scoring

Each section is scored on a band from 0 to 9 in 0.5 increments. Your overall band is the average of the four sections. For Australian visa purposes, band scores are assessed individually — all four bands must meet the required threshold. Averaging is not used. **For example:** An applicant with IELTS scores of 8.0 / 8.0 / 7.5 / 8.0 would not qualify for Superior English (requires 8.0 in every band) — only Proficient English (requires 7.0 in each).

Preparation tips

Take a full-length practice test under timed conditions before your first attempt.

The Writing section is where most applicants lose points — practise both Task 1 (describing data) and Task 2 (argumentative essays).

For Reading, practise skimming and scanning — you do not have time to read every word carefully.

The Speaking section is assessed on fluency, coherence, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation — not accent. Speak naturally.

IELTS can be retaken as many times as needed. Australian visa applications accept scores that are no more than 3 years old.
