Scoring

PTE Academic scores range from 10 to 90 in communicative skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing) and overall. For Australian visa purposes, each communicative skill score is assessed individually. **Key scores for Australian visas:** - Competent English: 50 in each communicative skill - Proficient English: 65 in each communicative skill - Superior English: 79 in each communicative skill The computer-based marking eliminates human bias and produces consistent results — many test-takers find PTE fairer than IELTS for high-scoring applicants.

Preparation tips

PTE Academic is highly consistent — the same AI marks every test. Understanding exactly what the algorithm looks for is crucial.

For "Repeat Sentence" and "Read Aloud" items, fluency and pronunciation matter most — practise reading aloud at natural pace.

"Write from Dictation" is the highest-weighted Listening item — prioritise accuracy over speed.

The computer-based format suits applicants who are comfortable with technology and prefer not to have a human examiner.

Results typically arrive within 48 hours — ideal if you need to lodge a visa application quickly.
