Skilled Independent — Document Checklist
The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a points-tested permanent residency visa. You must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and receive an invitation before applying.

Positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for your nominated occupation
Must be obtained before submitting your EOI
Assessment reference number and validity period
English Language
IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or CAE test results
Must meet at least Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each band)
Test reference number and test date
Identity & Civil Status
Valid passport (all pages)
Birth certificate
Marriage certificate (if married)
Divorce certificate (if previously married)
Change of name documentation (if applicable)
Skilled Employment Evidence
Employment reference letters (from each employer, on letterhead)
Should state title, duties, hours, and dates of employment
Payslips or tax records as supporting evidence
Employment contracts or position descriptions
Australian employment: employer reference + tax assessment notices (ATO)
Educational Qualifications
Degree certificates and academic transcripts
AQF credential assessment (if claiming Australian study points)
Health & Character
Health examination via an approved panel physician (HAP)
Book via the ImmiAccount — do not start until you have applied
Police clearance certificates from all countries lived in for 12+ months since age 16
Partner / Dependants (if included)
Partner's passport, birth certificate, marriage/de facto evidence
Partner's skills assessment (if claiming partner skills points)
Children's birth certificates and passports
Custody documentation for dependent children
