What is PIER?
PIER — the Professional Institute of Education Representatives — is Australia's regulatory body for education consultants (also called education agents). PIER-registered consultants have agreed to a Code of Ethics and are subject to professional standards oversight.
Why PIER Registration Matters
Most Australian universities and CRICOS providers will only work with PIER-registered consultants. Registration is not legally mandatory under Australian law (unlike migration agents), but it is effectively required to work with reputable institutions.
A PIER-registered consultant:
- Has agreed to ethical conduct standards
- Cannot accept commissions that create a conflict of interest
- Must refer students to appropriate institutions based on their needs
- Is accountable through a complaints process

Education Consultants vs Migration Agents
If you need both course placement and a student visa, you may need:
- An education consultant (for course selection and institution liaison)
- A MARA-registered migration agent (for visa advice and lodgement)
