Editorial assessment

What we love

  • The only REBAA-accredited agency here based in the Hunter — local knowledge rather than a Sydney agent driving up the M1.

  • Deliberately caps client numbers so each brief gets full attention, and states it aligns with no selling agents.

Where it falls short

  • That cap cuts both ways — availability, not credentials, may be your constraint. Ask how many briefs are open.

We couldn’t recommend Grant enough! We’re just so happy that with his help we’ve secured the perfect home for us, within our price range! Amazing! Grants knowledge of the local market & negotiation skills are unmatched. We know that without Grants help the whole process would have been much more stressful, confusing & overwhelming. From our first meeting, he was friendly & personable. We now count Grant as a friend & would recommended him to anyone thinking of purchasing a home in the Newcastle/Lake Macquarie area. Thanks so much Grant!

Highly recommended. A smooth and valuable experience. I would recommend Grant to my friends, my dear old mum - to everyone. We chose Grant Atherton to assess and inspect home properties in Newcastle (while we were intra-state), due to his expertise on the Newcastle market, and how well he presented his services. We went with a gut feeling based on Grant’s interpersonal skills, materials, and straightforward approach. From the off, it was obvious Grant is a very effective and professional buyers agent; well connected and respected by the local real estate agents; knowledgeable on the assessment, buying processes, locations and due diligence. Grant provided us with detailed video walkthroughs, a solid assessment report of key property aspects, value, planning issues and a comprehensive range of useful analysis of risks. Regular comms came through a WhatsApp group, meaning we quickly built trust and rapport, finding Grant to be very responsive to questions, calm and professional. We also had regular video calls to keep informed and moving smoothly forward. Grant negotiated the purchase of our new home providing invaluable advice. He secured us a very reasonable price and moved the Offer through so quickly the deal was done in 48hrs, avoiding the possibility of more interest over the weekend. We always felt Grant was on our side, and applying his considerable experience and balance when it counted most. One house we were interested in, Grant raised a number of red flags, which led to us getting our own building and inspection report. And we’re very glad we did! The Buyer’s Agent service proved to be great value for money. I’m delighted with the experience. Anyone considering Grant should do very well to have him involved in your home buying project.

We couldn't be happier with the support Grant provided throughout our property search. We had a very specific and clear brief. He genuinely took the time to understand what we were looking for, whilst also keeping us realistic about market conditions. Grant has strong relationships with local selling agents and a deep understanding of how they operate. He clearly explained pricing, backed everything up with solid sales analysis and identified risks early. We always felt informed, protected and confident in our decisions. Communication with us was excellent throughout our property search. Grant always made himself available to explain and answer our queries. A stressful time was always met with a calm and informed response. He attended many property viewings with us and gave us excellent feedback. He followed up any concerns or queries we had with the agents involved. We're absolutely thrilled with the property we purchased and would highly recommend Grant to anyone looking for a knowledgeable and trustworthy buyer's agent.

We've finally bought our first home, and it wouldn't have happened without Grant and the team at Open Doors! We've been looking for years, finding homes we loved, and making offers - only to lose out again and again. The market in Newcastle is hot with no signs of slowing down, so in December 2025 we engaged Grant from Open Doors. From the initial meeting it was clear that Grant had the expertise, insider knowledge and client-focused dedication that we needed. Grant conducted a thorough analysis of our needs and understood what we were looking for, and was cognisant of our budget (which was less than the median house price in the area). At that first meeting, Grant told us that he would help us find what we were looking for and get us over the line within a matter of a month or so. We were cautiously hopeful after looking since 2023 - but sure enough, he not only found us our dream home off-market, but provided the support and negotiation that was needed to make it ours. We get the keys in a matter of weeks! We're thrilled with the outcome and couldn't recommend Open Doors any higher. Thanks, Grant!

We had Grant recommended to us by a number of different people and we are so grateful that we did. He saved us so much time, effort and stress. He was professional in his approach, effective in his communication and extremely personable, taking a keen interest in our situation and life in general. Ultimately he was able to secure us a property within 24 hours of inspecting it and made sure we were well informed about what we needed to do and when we needed to do it. We could not have done it without him.

CompareMyAgents Editorial

The bottom line

The only REBAA-accredited agency on this list based in the Hunter, and the obvious pick if you are buying in Newcastle or Lake Macquarie rather than commuting a Sydney agent up the M1. Capacity is deliberately limited, which is the point — but it means availability, not credentials, may be your constraint. Ask how many briefs are open when you call.
