Plenty of capable English speakers stall at band 6.5 in IELTS Speaking, convinced they need fancier vocabulary or a "better" accent. They usually don''t. Here''s what band 7 actually rewards.

What band 7 speaking actually sounds like

Examiners score you on four things: fluency and coherence, vocabulary (lexical resource), grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. Band 7 means you speak at length without much effort, use a good range of language flexibly, make errors only occasionally, and can be understood throughout. Note what''s not there: perfection, or a native accent.

Fluency over perfection

The single biggest lever is fluency — speaking at length without long hesitations or constant self-correction. Students lose marks by stopping to search for the "perfect" word. Keep going. A fluent answer with a small error beats a halting, hyper-correct one.

Range: vocabulary and grammar

Band 7 shows range — a mix of sentence structures and some less common vocabulary used naturally. You don''t need obscure words; you need variety and the ability to paraphrase. Mixing simple and complex sentences comfortably signals control.

Pronunciation you can understand

Pronunciation is about being clear, not sounding British or American. Word stress, sentence rhythm and clear sounds matter far more than accent. If the examiner never has to strain to understand you, you''re in good shape.

Common mistakes that cap your score

  • One-word or memorised answers. Develop your ideas; don''t recite.
  • Over-correcting mid-sentence and killing your fluency.
  • Trying to use "big" words you don''t control, and misusing them.
  • Speaking too little. Part 2 especially rewards talking for the full time.

How to practise

Record yourself answering real questions and listen back for hesitations and repetition. Practise talking for two minutes on random topics. Read and listen widely to absorb natural phrasing. Consistency beats cramming.

The bottom line

Band 7 speaking rewards fluency, range and clarity — not perfection or an accent. Keep talking, vary your language, be clear, and stop chasing the perfect word. Fix the habits that cap you at 6.5 and the band 7 is well within reach.
